Rapport från Gammalsvenskby
De senaste dagarna har det varit många kraftiga explosioner runt byn och de ryska flygplanen flyger lågt. Det har också varit flera elavbrott. Det är mycket stressande, särskilt för de äldre.
Bron till den större staden Nova Kakhovka, som ligger 25 km längre nedströms och på andra sidan floden, är nu förstörd av den ukrainska armén, för att stoppa försörjningen till den ryska armén. Men det gör också att det inte längre är möjligt för hjälparbetarna att ta bussen dit för att köpa mediciner. Men de har tagit sig till närmaste staden Berislav för att köpa in blöjor och hygienprodukter till ålderdomshemmet och till de äldre som är sängliggande i hemmen.
Ryska ockupationsmakten har aviserat en folkomröstning den 11 september i Kherson län, som Gammalsvenskby tillhör. Men när de ryska soldaterna gått från hus till hus och kontrollerat dokument svarar soldaterna att det inte ska bli någon folkomröstning i byn, utan att de bara utför en folkräkning inför vintern. De har börjat dela ut pensioner i posthuset som delas ut kontant i rubel.
Det finns gott om mat i affären från Krym och Kazakstan, men det är mycket dyrt. Det går att betala i ukrainska Hrivna, kanske är det ett sätt att tömma landsbygden på ukrainska kontanter.
Ockupationsmakten har också utlyst tjänsten som byäldste (kommunchef), men det har inte tillsatts någon än. De räknar med att öppna skolan den 1 oktober med rysk läroplan, men inte heller där har de lyckats rekrytera rektor eller lärare.
Byborna är bekymrade inför vintern. Många behöver hitta en lösning för att värma sina hus. Föreningen tittar på möjligheter att kunna köpa in och subventionera inköp av kol, då de flesta värmer sina hus med små kaminer.
Vi hoppas på att den ukrainska motoffensiven i söder under hösten ska befria Kherson och Gammalsvenskby, som båda ligger på norra/västra banken av Dnjepr.

In recent days there have been many heavy explosions around the village and the Russian planes are flying low. There have also been several power outages. It is very stressful, especially for the elderly.
The bridge to the larger town of Nova Kakhovka, which is 25 km further downstream and on the other side of the river, is now destroyed by the Ukrainian army, to cut off supplies to the Russian army. But it also means that it is no longer possible for the aid workers to take the bus there to buy medicines. But they have made it to the nearest town of Berislav to buy diapers and hygiene products for the retirement home and for the elderly who are bedridden in the homes.
The Russian occupying power has announced a referendum on September 11 in Kherson county, to which Gammalsvenskby belongs. But when the Russian soldiers went from house to house and checked documents, the soldiers replied that there would be no referendum in the village, but that they would only carry out a census before winter. They have started handing out pensions in the post office, which are distributed in cash in rubles.
There is plenty of food in the store from Krym and Kazakhstan, but it is very expensive. It is possible to pay in Ukrainian Hryvnia, perhaps it is a way to empty the countryside of Ukrainian cash.
The occupying power has also announced the position of village elder (municipal manager), but no one has been appointed yet. They expect to open the school on October 1 with a Russian curriculum, but there, too, they have not succeeded in recruiting a principal or a teacher.
The villagers are worried about winter. Many need to find a solution to heat their houses. The association is looking at opportunities to buy in and subsidize the purchase of coal, as most people heat their houses with small stoves.
We hope that the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the south during the fall will liberate Kherson and Gammalsvenskby, both of which are on the north/west bank of the Dnieper.
